DO I NEED A VISA TO ENTER EGYPT?
US citizens are eligible for obtaining a renewable, single-entry, 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, for a $25 USD fee.
Citizens of other countries may need to apply for a tourist visa in their respective countries before flying. If you need a support letter for your visa, please reach out to us!
CAN I USE MY CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS WHILE IN EGYPT?
Most mid- and high-end tourist hotels will accept major credit cards, with Visa and MasterCard having the widest acceptance in Egypt. American Express is less commonly accepted, but still useful in higher-end facilities. The majority of small restaurants and shops remain cash-only, so plan ahead for cash. USD can be converted to Egyptian pounds at the airport, or any banks within the country.
SHOULD I ACTIVATE ROAMING OR BUY A LOCAL SIM CARD?
We suggest you activate roaming at least for the day of your arrival, to manage reaching a driver in the airport. Unfortunately, airport WIFI is often non-functional. If your phone accepts any sim card, you might want to consider purchasing a local sim card to use during your stay. There are three main providers: Orange, Etisalat and Vodafone, who have stores spread all over Cairo, as well as a booth in the airport. It would be most convenient to purchase your sim card upon your arrival in the airport.
If you choose to not purchase a SIM card, you can plan ahead to activate an international pass with your at-home cell provider (i.e. T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, etc.).
WHAT IS THE APPROPRIATE DRESS CODE DURING SIGHTSEEING?
Choose heavy winter clothes and don't expose a lot of skin. For ladies, it's recommended to wear pants/skirts that at least cover the knee, and shirts that cover the shoulders.
SHOULD I HAGGLE/BARGAIN IN EGYPT?
Haggling is an art; but, it should only be used in the right place. In supermarkets, big stores, coffee shops, malls, and restaurants there is no haggling. However, in Khan el Khalili bazaar, you should haggle a lot! Similarly, in tourist areas like Luxor and Aswan and even in souvenir shops in downtown Cairo, it is acceptable to haggle. A smile and some patience will take you a long way, but if that doesn't work, threatening to leave the shop and not make the purchase oftentimes does the trick.
HOW DO I GET AROUND THE COUNTRY?
We recommend using Uber, Careem or inDrive for transportation. It is best to set up your account beforehand. We highly discourage guests to get around using taxis, as they can up-charge the ride.
